EXHIBITION MINE | MINING MUSEUM | MINERAL COLLECTION
STONY RICH HERITAGE
Show Mine & Mining Museum
Opened in Knappenberg in 1980, mining history can be seen, heard and experienced up close in the show mine. Hüttenberg calls itself the "iron heart" of Carinthia and looks back on more than 2,000 years of ore mining history. The Noric iron of the region was already valued by the Celts, was known far beyond the borders of the Roman Empire and was mined until the 1970s.
Mineral collection
As the largest mineral site in Europe and the third largest in the world, a fascinating mineral collection awaits you. The magic of stones is awakened in an extensive, colorful exhibition, complemented by numerous fossil finds. At the Alberthalde, not far from the mining museum, laymen and experts alike - with a little luck and patience - can find rock crystals, malachite, calcite, pyrite, chalcedony, celestine, amethyst and many other treasures.
... and further to Heft
Above ground - on the historical way of the ore to the smelting plant in the district of Heft, the old ore railroad - you can reach on foot or by bicycle the monumental ironworks with its two characteristic charcoal blast furnaces Johann-Ernst and Pulcheria - today accessible in the open-air museum.
